Adjustment of Status

Becoming a permanent resident without leaving the U.S.

Adjustment of status is the process of applying for a green card from inside the United States once an immigrant visa category is available to you.

Who this is for

  • Applicants with an approved or concurrently filed I-130 or I-140
  • People whose priority date is current on the Visa Bulletin

What to know

  • While the I-485 is pending, you can apply for a work permit and advance parole for travel.
  • Leaving the country without advance parole can abandon a pending application for many applicants.
  • Applicants with an AC21-eligible pending case may be able to change jobs.
